New Fisheries Manager

We are pleased to welcome Jonathan Lowe as the new Fisheries Manager for Millbrook First Nation. Mr. Lowe has over twenty years of experience in fisheries biology and aquatic research, marine management, and coastal economic development. He most recently worked for the Province of Nova Scotia as a senior marine resource advisor. His other employment experience includes term positions at Parks Canada -Kejimkujik Seaside Adjunct, Acadia University, the Municipality of Kings County and the Department of Lands and Forestry.

Mr. Lowe has been a member on various diversity hiring panels, along with diversity work committees aimed at ensuring workspaces are reflective of underrepresented and marginalized groups, and those with protected characteristics as defined by human rights and employment equity legislation in Canada. He has volunteered with the Aboriginal Training and Employment Commission (APTEC) and currently the Native Council of Nova Scotia. He has completed courses specific to human resource selection and hiring processes for promoting diversity within organizations and undertaken specific training on consulting with Indigenous peoples here in Nova Scotia. He has also completed university coursework in environmental law.

Mr. Lowe has a passion for working with First Nations and Indigenous communities and is a strong supporter of Aboriginal and treaty rights. He is a proponent of Mi’kmaw community-based fisheries management which directly incorporates the concept of Netuklimk and Indigenous Traditional Knowledge while complementing objective science. He believes that our intrinsic values of collaboration, kindness and unity will move us forward as a strong and thriving Mi’kmaw Nation.

Mr. Lowe is an off-reserve Mi’kmaq, originally from Milton, Queens County. He enjoys hunting, fishing, trapping, learning about and harvesting wild edibles and medicines, and researching Mi’kmaw history in his spare time.

Local Artwork "Mi’kmaw Circle of Life" installed at Treaty Entertainment

We are excited to announce that the artwork has been installed on our New Gaming Building in Millbrook, Designed by Justin Julien of the Millbrook First Nation, titled “Mi’kmaw Circle of Life.”

Justin was one of several artist’s who submitted their artwork in the recent contest and was selected as the winner. As a former employee of Treaty Entertainment it brings his connection to the organization full circle.

Province opens Pfizer, Moderna vaccines to 45-49 age group

Nova Scotians from ages 45-49 are now eligible for the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines.

Nova Scotians ages 45-49 are now eligible for the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines.

Appointments for the two mRNA vaccines opened to the new age group Friday, according to a news release from the Department of Health.

There are about 65,000 eligible Nova Scotians in the age group.

Until Friday, the two vaccines were only available to Nova Scotians 50 and up. The province has been gradually lowering the age for eligibility as part of its vaccine rollout strategy.

The vaccines are available to the new age group at all community clinics and designated pharmacies, and more appointments will be released as vaccine supply is confirmed.

This age group is also eligible for the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Appointments for the vaccine must be made online or by phone at 1-833-797-7772.

Anyone who worked at or visited the following locations on the specified dates and times should visit covid-self-assessment.novascotia.ca/ to book a COVID-19 test, regardless of whether or not they have COVID-19 symptoms. You can also call 811 if you don’t have online access or if you have other symptoms that concern you.

For the following locations, if you do not have any symptoms of COVID-19 you do not need to self-isolate while you wait for your test result. If you have symptoms of COVID-19 you are required to self-isolate while you wait for your test result.

Giant Tiger Port Hawkesbury (47 Paint Street, Port Hawkesbury) on April 23 from 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus at this location on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 7.

Please note: due to the high volume of tests, we are experiencing some delays in processing negative lab results, and delays issuing notifications. Efficiency Nova Scotia Notice

We understand that many of our Mi’kmaw communities are taking measures with precautions, to keep their membership safe by restricting movement in and out of their communities, during this spike in COVID-19 spread. As a further measure, Efficiency Nova Scotia has suspended all in-home services across all of its programs, including the Mi’kmaw Home Energy Efficiency Project. Our delivery agent and contractors will be contacting participants soon to cancel all upcoming appointments.

This suspension of services is effective immediately and will remain in place until at least May 12th. We will continue to monitor public health directives and take direction from you on when your community is ready to start in-home services again nit`ap.

Millbrook Early Education Centre Closure Update

Good afternoon families,

This notice is to advise all parents and students that we be extending the M.E.E.C. closure until Thursday, May 13, 2021. We apologize for any inconvenience this extension may cause, as our children's safety is our top priority. We will notify the community if any changes occur.

PLEASE NOTE - we have NOT been contacted by public health. This decision is being made out of an abundance of caution. We feel that an immediate closure will protect our students and staff until we have additional information.

·     Seamus David’s Irish Pub (21 Logiealmond Cl, Dartmouth) on April 21 between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus at this location on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 5. 

·     Habaneros Modern Taco Bar (1551 South Park St, Halifax) on April 21 between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus at this location on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 5. 

·     Gateway Meat Market (667 Main St, Dartmouth) on April 22 between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus at this location on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 6. 

·     Giant Tiger Woodlawn (114 Woodlawn Rd, Dartmouth) on April 22 between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus at this location on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 6. 

·     Superstore Portland Street (650 Portland St, Dartmouth) on April 22 between 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus at this location on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 6. 

·     Superstore Braemar (9 Braemar Dr, Dartmouth) on April 22 between 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus at this location on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 6. 

·     Fit4Less Dresden Row (1535 Dresden Row, Halifax) on April 22 between 7 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus at this location on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 6. 

·     Gap Halifax Shopping Centre (7001 Mumford Rd, Halifax) on April 23 between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus at this location on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 7. 

·     CrossFit Basinview (9 Symonds Rd, Bedford) on April 24 between 6:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus at this location on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 8. 

·     Superstore Barrington (1075 Barrington St, Halifax) on April 25 between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus at this location on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 9. 

·     Halifax Transit routes: 

·     Route 10 on April 21, April 22 and April 23 traveling from Dartmouth Bridge Terminal towards Westphal between 9:45 a.m. and 11 a.m., and from Westphal towards Bridge Terminal between 2:45 p.m. and 4 p.m. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus at this location on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 7. 

·     Route 10 on April 21 and April 22 travelling from Spring Garden towards Tacoma between 7:45 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and from Tacoma towards Spring Garden between 4:30 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus at this location on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 6. 

 

Anyone who was on the following flight in the specified rows and seats should visit https://covid-self-assessment.novascotia.ca/en to book a COVID-19 test, regardless of whether or not they have COVID-19 symptoms. You can also call 811 if you don’t have online access or if you have other symptoms that concern you. 

 

·     Air Canada 8780 travelling on April 22 from Montreal (8:20 a.m.) to Halifax (10:45 a.m.). Passengers in rows 22-28, seats C, D and F are asked to immediately visit https://covid-self-assessment.novascotia.ca/en to book a COVID-19 test, regardless of whether or not they have COVID-19 symptoms. All other passengers on this flight should continue to self-isolate as required and monitor for signs and symptoms of COVID-19. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus on this flight on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 6. 

·     Air Canada 8782 travelling on April 24 from Montreal (7:10 p.m.) to Halifax (9 p.m.). Passengers in rows 7-13, seats A, C and D are asked to immediately visit https://covid-self-assessment.novascotia.ca/en to book a COVID-19 test, regardless of whether or not they have COVID-19 symptoms. All other passengers on this flight should continue to self-isolate as required and monitor for signs and symptoms of COVID-19. It is anticipated that anyone exposed to the virus on this flight on the named date may develop symptoms up to, and including, May 8. 

 

Please remember:

Do not go directly to a COVID-19 assessment centre without being directed to do so. Please book an appointment online or call 811 and do not go to a pop-up rapid testing location.

 

Currently, anyone who traveled outside of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland and Labrador is expected to self-isolate alone for 14 days after arriving. If a person returning from non-essential travel outside of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland and Labrador is unable to isolate alone, then everyone in the home where they are isolating will have to self-isolate as well.
